Products Description of maleic-anhydride.html">Maleic anhydride CAS# 108-31-6
Maleic anhydride is the cyclic anhydride of maleic acid. It appears as a colorless or white solid at room temperature with a characteristic acidic taste, molecular formula C4H2O3 and molecular weight 98.06. It forms needle-like crystals when crystallized from chloroform or ether. Key properties include melting point 60℃, boiling point 82℃ at 1.8665 kPa, and relative density 1.3146 at 60℃. It is soluble in acetone, chloroform and ether, slightly soluble in petroleum ether. It hydrolyzes in water to form maleic acid and reacts with alcohols to produce esters. It readily undergoes Diels-Alder reactions with conjugated dienes. Maleic anhydride is toxic and strongly irritates mucous membranes.
