Sodium tripolyphosphate CAS7758294
Sodium tripolyphosphate is a high-performaleic-anhydride.html">mance detergent additive widely used in detergent manufacturing. It serves four key functions in washing formulations
1. Heavy metal ion chelation
Heavy metal ions present in washing water can bind with detergent molecules to form insoluble salts, weakening or completely eliminating cleaning efficiency. A chelating agent is therefore essential to neutralize these ions. Sodium tripolyphosphate exhibits strong chelating capacity toward heavy metal ions, sequestering them and removing their negative impacts on washing. It also captures metal-containing impurities in soils, aiding soil detachment. It acts as a soap booster and prevents fat precipitation and blooming in bar soaps.
2. Soil peptizing emulsifying and dispersing effects
Many soils include body fluids mainly proteins and fatty materials as well as external sand and dust. Sodium tripolyphosphate swells solubilizes and peptizes protein-based soils, promotes fat emulsification, and disperses solid particulate soils. It provides strong emulsification for oils and greases and helps buffer the pH of soap solutions.
3. Anti-caking property for detergents
Synthetic laundry powders tend to absorb moisture and cake under high humidity, making them inconvenient to use. Sodium tripolyphosphate forms a stable hexahydrate upon water absorption, which remains dry. When included in detergent recipes, it effectively prevents caking caused by moisture and keeps powder products free-flowing and granular.
4. Alkaline buffering for cleaning solutions
Sodium tripolyphosphate provides significant alkaline buffering, maintaining the washing solution at approximately pH 9.4, which supports the removal of acidic soils.

Product Application
Sodium tripolyphosphate is a binder stabilizer and sequestrant that is mildly alkaline with a pH of 10 and moderately soluble in water with a solubility of 15g in 100ml of water at 25°C. It enhances the whipping performance of egg-based angel food cake mixes and meringues. It reduces gelation in juices and canned ham and tenderizes canned peas and lima beans. It acts as a moisture-retaining binder in cured pork safeguards against discoloration and lowers cooking loss in sausage products. In algin-based desserts it serves as a calcium sequestrant. Sodium tripolyphosphate is also known as pentasodium tripolyphosphate and sodium triphosphate.
