Sodium carboxyl methylstarch CAS#9063-38-1
Sodium starch glycolate appears as a white or nearly white, free-flowing powder with high hygroscopicity. As described in PhEur 6.0, microscopic observation reveals irregular, ovoid, or pear-shaped granules ranging from 30 to 100 micrometers, or round granules 10 to 35 micrometers; compound granules with 2–4 units appear occasionally. Granules feature an eccentric hilum and distinct concentric striations. Under polarized light, a clear black cross intersects at the hilum, with tiny crystals on granule surfaces. The granules swell significantly when exposed to water.

Product Application of Sodium carboxyl methylstarch CAS#9063-38-1
Sodium starch glycolate is extensively used in oral medicines as a disintegrant for capsules and tablets. It works well in tablets made by direct compression or wet granulation. Typical usage levels are 2%–8%, with an optimal dose around 4%; 2% often suffices for many formulations. Disintegration happens through fast water absorption followed by quick, substantial expansion.
Unlike many disintegrants whose performance drops with hydrophobic additives like lubricants, sodium starch glycolate keeps strong disintegrating action. Higher tableting compression pressure also does not lengthen disintegration time.
Research has also explored its use as a suspending agent in liquid formulations.
