Mineral oil also known as white oil is an industrial product with purity of no less than 99%. It is a colorless transparent liquid with nearly no odor. Its melting point is -15°C and boiling point ranges from 300 to 500°C. Vapor pressure is 0.0001 hPa at 25°C and relative density is 0.85 at 20°C. It is insoluble in water soluble in ether and chloroform and slightly soluble in maleic-anhydride.html">material/ethanol.html">ethanol. It is stable and incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.

Mineral oil serves as a covering layer for microdrops of culture medium in petri dishes. It is an active component in baby lotions cold creams ointments and cosmetics. It is also used in electrical and mechanical industries as heat transfer fluid in electrical parts and non-conductive coolant. It can be used as transformer oil rust inhibitor for blades and insulator in high voltage switchgear. In addition it is used to store reactive metals such as lithium sodium and so on and suspend crystals in X-ray crystallography.
