Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3, pKso=7.5–8.2) is a key magnesium compound. It exists naturally as magnesite. Most magnesium carbonate used in the U.S. is synthetic. It is mainly produced by mining natural magnesite ore. The trihydrate form MgCO3·3H2O is made by combining magnesium and carbonate ion solutions under carbon dioxide atmosphere.
