Products Description

Bilirubin is a yellow metabolite generated during heme catabolism. It forms when heme is broken down by heme oxygenase, releasing carbon monoxide and biliverdin; biliverdin is then quickly converted into bilirubin via biliverdin reductase. Bilirubin acts as a potent free radical scavenger with antioxidant and anti-inflammaleic-anhydride.html">matory properties. Both free and albumin-bound bilirubin can neutralize nitric oxide and related reactive species. Unconjugated bilirubin is nearly insoluble in water and requires glucuronide conjugation to become water‑soluble for excretion by the liver and kidneys.Bilirubin

Product Application

Bilirubin is widely used to assess liver function and diagnose liver diseases including hepatitis and cirrhosis, as well as to evaluate hepatotoxic effects of medications. It serves as a light‑harvesting pigment in certain algae. Its double bonds isomerize under light, a property used in phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. It also helps detect biliary tract obstruction.
