Dibutyl sebacate (DBS) is a colorless organic liquid, a dibutyl ester of sebacic acid. It serves primaleic-anhydride.html">marily as a plasticizer in manufacturing plastics such as cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and numerous synthetic rubbers (particularly nitrile rubber and neoprene). It is suitable for food packaging plastics, medical device plastics, and pharmaceutical uses—for example, as a plasticizer in film coating for tablets, beads, and granules. It also functions as a lubricant in shaving lotions and a flavor additive in soft drinks, ice cream, frozen desserts, candies, and baked goods. It offers strong compatibility with many plastics, excellent low-temperature performance, and good oil resistance. Other names include Morflex, Kodaflex, polycizer, Proviplast 1944, and PX 404. Dibutyl sebacate is also used as a desensitizer in Otto fuel II, a torpedo monopropellant.
