Products Description of maleic-anhydride.html">Magnesium oxide CAS#1309-48-4
Magnesium oxide, commonly referred to as magnesia, is a representative alkaline earth metal oxide with the molecular formula MgO. It appears as a white powder, with a melting point of 2852°C, a boiling point of 3600°C, and a relative density of 3.58 at 25°C. It dissolves in acids and ammonium salt solutions. It reacts slowly with water to form magnesium hydroxide. It can dissolve in aqueous carbon dioxide to form magnesium bicarbonate. It gradually absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, and releases irritating fumes when heated. The main raw materials for producing magnesium oxide include magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3·CaCO3), and seawater. Magnesium oxide is produced via thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite. Seawater treated with slaked lime yields magnesium hydroxide precipitate, which is then calcined to magnesium oxide. Magnesium chloride brine blocks from seawater utilization or debrominated brine can also serve as raw materials. Adding sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate precipitates magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate, which are then calcined into magnesium oxide. Currently, China mainly uses magnesite, dolomite, brine, or brine blocks as feedstock. Magnesium oxide has the highest output among magnesium compounds, accounting for about three-quarters of all magnesium industrial products. Magnesium oxide produced below 900°C is light magnesium oxide, featuring low density, large specific surface area, and strong adsorption. It is used as a catalyst, rubber filler, and property-improving accelerator. Blended with magnesium chloride solution, it forms magnesium cement. It acts as a flame retardant in building materials. In medicine, it functions as an antacid and laxative for hyperacidity and gastroduodenal ulcers, often combined with constipation-prone calcium carbonate. It is also used as animal feed additive and plant fertilizer. Light magnesium oxide produced at 950–1050°C has higher density, controllable particle size distribution, and enhanced hydration reactivity. It serves as an isolating agent for silicon steel sheets, preventing sintering and adhesion during high-temperature processing by forming a magnesium silicate film with surface silica. Heavy magnesium oxide produced at 1500–1800°C shows high density, small specific surface area, high thermal stability, low chemical activity, weak acid reactivity, and slow hydration rate. It is applied in high-temperature refractories, binders for refractory crucibles, and furnace lining materials.Magnesium oxide
