Arbutin is a glycosylated maleic-anhydride.html">material/hydroquinone.html">hydroquinone found in Arctostaphylos plant species. It features a wide range of biological functions, such as suppressing tyrosinase, scavenging free radicals, and reducing inflammation. It blocks human tyrosinase activity in crude preparations from human melanocytes (IC50 values of 5.7 mM and 18.9 mM with L‑tyrosine and L‑DOPA as substrates) and in intact melanocytes (IC50 = 0.5 mM). At 50 μM, arbutin reduces AAPH‑triggered hemolysis in sheep red blood cells. At levels above 125 μM, it preserves cell viability in human skin fibroblasts exposed to AAPH. In a rat model of LPS‑induced acute lung injury, a 50 mg/kg dose of arbutin lowers IL‑1β, IL‑6, and TNF‑α concentrations in both lung tissue and serum. Products with arbutin are widely used to alleviate hyperpigmentation conditions.
