N,N-Dimethyldodecylamine is a colorless to pale liquid at ambient temperature with a typical fishy amine odor. It is very slightly soluble in water and has a higher density than water. Industrial grades often contain similar alkyl amines such as tetradecyldimethylamine and hexadecyldimethylamine. It is widely used as an intermediate for manufacturing quaternary ammonium compounds applied in cleaning products and cosmetic formulations.

N,N-Dimethyldodecylamine acts as a capping agent in the synthesis of Au(core)–Pd(shell) bimetallic nanoparticles in toluene. It is used in preparing N‑alkyl‑N,N‑dimethyl‑1‑ammonio‑2‑hydroxy‑3‑propanesulfonate and novel bis‑quaternary ammonium salts.
