Xylene is a colorless, flammable liquid. The melting points of ortho-, meta- and para-xylene are -25.2°C, -47.9°C and 13.3°C correspondingly, while their boiling points are 144.4°C, 139.1°C and 138.3°C. Relative densities are 0.8802, 0.8642 and 0.8611 respectively. It is insoluble in water but miscible with numerous organic solvents. Under catalytic oxidation, they produce phthalic anhydride, isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid sequentially.
