8-Hydroxyquinoline appears as white to cream-colored crystals or crystalline powder. It is insoluble in water and ether, but freely dissolves in ethanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, and aqueous mineral acids. It easily forms stable metal chelates that may be soluble or form precipitates in organic solvents based on solution pH (Hollingshead, 1954).
8-Hydroxyquinoline is a monohydroxyquinoline where a hydroxyl group is attached at the 8-position of quinoline. It features fungicidal activity used to manage gray mold in grapes and tomatoes. It functions as an antibacterial agent, iron chelator, antiseptic drug, and antifungal agrochemical. It is derived from the hydride of quinoline.

Product Application of 8-Hydroxyquinoline CAS#148-24-3
8-Hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) serves as an intermediate for manufacturing halogenated quinoline anti-amebic medicines, including quiniodoform, clioquinoline, diiodoquinoline, and similar agents. These drugs achieve anti-amebic effects by suppressing intestinal commensal bacteria. They are effective against amoebic dysentery but inactive against extra-intestinal amoebic parasites.
8HQ is a small planar molecule with lipophilic characteristics and strong metal chelation capacity. Accordingly, 8HQ and its derivatives exhibit diverse pharmaceutical activities, including anti-neurodegenerative, anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects.
