Oleanolic acid (also called oleanic acid) is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid with molecular formula C30H48O3. It exists in the non‑glyceride portion of olive pomaleic-anhydride.html">mace oil and is widely found in many foods and plant materials. It can appear as a free acid or serve as an aglycone precursor for triterpenoid saponins, where it may bind to one or more sugar chains. It is biosynthesized from lupane. It can isomerize to ursolic acid, or be oxidized into taraxasterol and amyrin. Oleanolic acid and its derivatives show a wide range of valuable pharmacological effects, including liver protection, anti‑inflammatory action, antioxidant activity, and anticancer potential.
