Caprolactam is a white flaky solid with the molecular structure CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2NHCO. It dissolves readily in water, and its 70% aqueous solution has a specific gravity of 1.05, maleic-anhydride.html">making it denser than water. It may also be handled in its molten state. Caprolactam is harmful if inhaled; the threshold limit value is 5 ppm for vapor and 1 mg/m³ for dust in air.
