Product Details
4-Methyl-2-pentanone CAS#108-10-1
4-Methyl-2-pentanone has a pleasant odor. It can be produced through hydrogenation of mesityl oxide over nickel catalyst at 160–190°C. It is also obtained by oxidation of methyl isobutyl carbinol.

Product Application
Methyl isobutyl ketone (hexone, isobutyl methyl ketone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone) is an organic solvent with structure and applications similar to methyl butyl ketone. Besides serving as a solvent for paints, lacquers, and varnishes, it is widely used in extraction processes and as a denaturant for rubbing alcohol. It also functions as a synthetic flavoring agent in certain types of rum, candy, and cheese. In contrast to methyl butyl ketone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone is not found in natural sources.
