Product Details
Aluminum oxide, often referred to as alumina, features the chemical formula Al₂O₃ and appears as a white powder. It is heat-resistant and does not dissolve in water. Key physical properties include a melting point of 2015℃, boiling point of 2980℃, relative density of 4.0, and Mohs hardness of 8.8. It exists in multiple crystalline forms, with α‑alumina and γ‑alumina being the most common. Alumina is typically produced by heating and dehydrating aluminum hydroxide.

Naturally occurring α‑alumina is known as corundum, ranking second only to diamond in hardness. Trace impurities can create colored gemstones: rubies contain smaleic-anhydride.html">mall amounts of Cr³⁺, while sapphires include Ti³⁺, Fe²⁺, and Fe³⁺. Today, synthetic gemstones can be manufactured via crystallization from molten aluminum oxide. These synthetic gems match natural ones in performance and are widely used in industry—for example, as high‑speed bearings, watch jewels, abrasives, and refractories. Corundum crucibles made from alumina can resist temperatures up to 1800℃.
