Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic primary alcohol with the formula C6H5CH2OH. It appears as a colorless, viscous liquid with a mild aromatic scent. Upon prolonged exposure to air, it may oxidize slightly to form benzaldehyde, which gives a faint bitter almond note. It is polar, has low toxicity and low vapor pressure, making it widely useful as a solvent. The material is flammable. It is slightly soluble in water and fully miscible with common organic solvents including ethanol, ether, benzene and chloroform. Naturally, it occurs in many essential oils either free or as esters. Benzyl alcohol is not suitable for long-term storage as it gradually oxidizes in air. Strong oxidizing agents can convert it to benzoic acid. It exerts anesthetic effects and may irritate eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Ingestion, inhalation or skin contact may lead to discomfort or more severe reactions. The rat oral LD50 is 1230 mg/kg. In humans, it is metabolized to benzoic acid, conjugated with glycine in the liver, and excreted as hippuric acid. Use as an injection solvent has been associated with gluteal muscle contracture in rare cases.

Product Application of Chloranil CAS#118-75-2
Benzyl alcohol serves as a versatile solvent for nanowire manipulation, inks, coatings, paints and epoxy resins. It is a key precursor for esters used in fragrances, flavors and soaps. It functions as a local anesthetic to reduce injection pain. It is widely used in personal care including baby items, cleansers, makeup, hair, nail and skin care products.
