First synthesized in 1866 by Alexander Zaytsev in the Russian Empire, dimethyl sulfoxide is an organosulfur compound. This colorless liquid serves as an important polar aprotic solvent capable of dissolving both polar and nonpolar substances. It mixes readily with numerous organic solvents as well as water.

Product Application of Dimethyl Sulfoxide#67-68-5
DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent widely used in chemical synthesis, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and as a cryoprotectant for cell, tissue and organ preservation. It protects cells from mechanical damage caused by ice crystals during freezing. DMSO is included in cell freezing media for storing primary cells, subcultured cells, recombinant heteroploid cell lines, hybridoma cells, embryonic stem cells (ESC), and hematopoietic stem cells. It is often used together with BSA or fetal bovine serum (FBS).
