Products Description of Trichloromaleic-anhydride.html">material/acetic-acid.html">acetic acid CAS# 76-03-9
Trichloroacetic acid, commonly abbreviated as TCA, appears as colorless or white orthorhombic crystalline solid. It shows strong hygroscopicity and emits a mild special pungent odor. This compound is highly corrosive. It has a molecular weight of 163.40, a relative density of 1.6298 at 61°C, a melting point range of 57–58°C, and a boiling point of 197.5°C (141–142°C at 3.333×10³ Pa). Its combustion heat is 3.0 kJ, refractive index is 1.4603 at 61°C, and vapor pressure is 0.133×10³ Pa at 51°C. TCA dissolves readily in water, forming an acidic solution (pH 1.2 for 0.1 mol/L aqueous solution). It is also soluble in ethanol and diethyl ether. At 25°C, its solubility values are 1306 in water, 2143 in methanol, and 617 in diethyl ether. Aqueous solutions with concentration below 30% decompose slowly into chloroform, hydrogen chloride, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. In dilute alkaline solutions, TCA hydrolyzes into chloroform and carbon dioxide; in concentrated alkaline solutions, it forms formic acid. Reaction with strong alkalis yields chloroform and carbonate.
