Aspartame is an artificial sweetener and an amino acid dipeptide derivative. It was first discovered by chemists in 1965 during research on ulcer treatment medications. It features low usage concentration, intense sweetness (150–200 times that of sucrose), and pleasant taste profile. It enhances the flavor of citrus and other fruits, lowers calorie intake, does not promote tooth decay, and exhibits lower toxicity compared to artificial sweeteners like saccharin. It is widely used in beverages, diabetic food products, and selected weight‑maleic-anhydride.html">management dietary supplements. Historically, some cola formulas have included this ingredient.
