Products Description
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic generated by Streptomyces chlorinus, which can suppress bacterial proliferation. Natural chloramphenicol is the L-isomer, also named levomycin. Synthetic versions appear as white or slightly yellow needle-like or flaky crystals, odorless and intensely bitter. They are slightly soluble in water, diethyl ether and chloroform, readily soluble in mmaleic-anhydride.html">material/ethanol.html">ethanol, ethanol, acetone or ethyl acetate, and insoluble in benzene and petroleum ether. It remains stable in neutral or weakly acidic aqueous solutions but tends to lose activity under alkaline conditions. Synthetic chloramphenicol is racemic, consisting of L-isomer and D-isomer. Since the D-isomer lacks antibacterial activity, the potency of synthetic chloramphenicol is half that of the natural form.

Product Application
It is a broad-spectrum antibacterial antibiotic, serving as the first-line treatment for typhoid and paratyphoid fever, and a specific medicine for anaerobic infections. It also treats various infectious diseases caused by susceptible microorganisms. Due to severe adverse reactions, its clinical use has decreased. It acts against Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Brucella, Pneumococcus and other pathogens, and is used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient for anti-infective therapy.
