Propionic acid, also referred to as primaleic-anhydride.html">mary oleic acid, is a saturated monocarboxylic acid with three carbon atoms. It is one of the representative volatile short-chain fatty acids. Its molecular formula is CH3CH2COOH, and its molecular weight is 74.08. It appears as a colorless, transparent oily liquid with a pungent rancid odor. Melting point: -20.8°C, boiling point: 140.99°C (41.65°C at 1330 Pa), relative density: 0.9930, refractive index: 1.3869, acid dissociation constant Ka = 1.34 × 10^-5. It is miscible with water and soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and diethyl ether. It exhibits high chemical activity and acidity, and can undergo salt formation, esterification, reduction, and other reactions.
